Airport to Resort, and the Dawn Run Back
There are two lodging areas to weigh: the resort belt on Mactan island where the airport sits (minimal transfers), and Cebu City (urban hotels, malls). With kids, a Mactan resort about 20 minutes from the airport is the default.

How it works. Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has designated Grab pickup points at each terminal: the international Terminal 2, where Incheon flights land, uses the South Wing side, and the domestic Terminal 1 uses Arrival Bays A-D; the Grab app shows the exact spot per terminal. City-bound rides run 300-500 pesos. Among taxis, white is the regular metered fleet and yellow the airport fleet with a higher flag-down and meter rate, so white is cheaper over the same distance. Families with luggage do best pre-booking a hotel pickup. For a budget option toward the city, the MyBus shuttle to SM City runs around 50 pesos, but it operates in daytime hours and is no use for a dawn arrival.
Working backwards on departure. If your return leaves in the 2-3 a.m. band, aim to be at the airport before midnight. From a Mactan resort, leaving around 11 p.m. is comfortable; from Cebu City, add an hour for the two bridges. Plan the last evening around your departure time rather than the room's checkout time, and packing and showers stop being a scramble.

Day by Day
Day 2. Land at Dawn, End at the Pool
Landing between midnight and 2 a.m. puts you in bed around 3 after immigration, bags and the resort transfer. Book that room from the previous night so you can walk straight in. The morning goes to sleep and a late breakfast; the trip actually starts in the afternoon. On a daytime flight you can skip the previous-night booking and spend this recovery half day at the pool or Ocean Park instead.
Resort pool and private beach Mactan's resort belt is built around kids' pools and private beaches, and ending arrival day here is the family playbook. Push a hopping tour or a city outing into this day and the dawn-arrival fatigue carries into the next.
Cebu Ocean Park If someone is bored of the resort by mid-afternoon, an aquarium billed as the country's largest is about 40 minutes away by car. Open daily 10:00-18:00 with ticket sales until 17:00; online rates are 750 pesos on weekdays and 900 on weekends and holidays (800/1,000 at the gate). Children under 3 feet (about 91 cm) enter free, which keeps the bill down for toddler families.
Day 3. Ferry to Bohol, the Heart of This Trip
On the 8:20 a.m. sailing, leave the resort before 6:30 to reach the pier with over an hour in hand (30-45 minutes by car from Mactan resorts to Cebu Pier 1). OceanJet's rule is check-in closes 30 minutes before departure; with a family, 60-90 minutes early is the safe margin. The pier sometimes collects a terminal fee and porterage charges in cash, so carry small peso notes, and leaving the big suitcases at the Mactan resort and packing one overnight bag keeps the crossing light. Tagbilaran arrival is around 10:20, where your pre-booked private driver waits with a name sign. A private car (2,500-3,500 pesos for a sedan, 3,500-5,500 for a van, market rates) beats joined van tours for handling bathroom stops and naps on your own clock. The last Loboc lunch boat leaves at 2:30 p.m. If the ferry runs a little late, keep the Corella visit under an hour; if you leave the port after 11, drive straight to Loboc for the lunch boat and skip Corella (it closes at 3:30 p.m.); the Chocolate Hills still fit afterwards. When fuel prices swing, some sailings get cut (it happened in late August 2026), so check the current month's timetable when you book.
Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary (Corella) A foundation-run forest protecting the palm-sized nocturnal tarsier. Entrance is 150 pesos, hours 8:30-15:30, and fees fund conservation. The rules are explicit: no flash, no touching, keep voices low, don't linger at one animal. Agree on the rules with your kids beforehand; the visit is a guided walk viewing sleeping tarsiers from a distance. A daytime-sleeping animal is especially fragile to noise, and even the shaded trail runs hot and humid, so bring water.
Loboc River lunch cruise An hour-long buffet lunch on a raft restaurant drifting a palm-lined river. Per the local tourism authority's advisory the fare rose to 1,200 pesos per person on April 16, 2026 (height-based child discounts are confirmed at the landing), with lunch boats leaving every 30 minutes between 10:00 and 14:30. The scenery and onboard performances, more than the food, are the point, and the hour on the water gives children a moving view to follow. Drinks cost extra.
Chocolate Hills viewpoint (Carmen) Bohol's signature view: over a thousand cone hills running to the horizon. Since October 2025 admission is 150 pesos for adults, 75 for ages 6-12, free for ages 5 and under. Around 200 steps climb from the parking area to the deck with almost no shade, so plan to carry small children (a carrier or hip seat helps) and bring water and hats; leave the stroller in the car. Note the viewpoints old blogs mention, Sagbayan Peak and Captain's Peak, have been reported closed since 2025 and 2024 respectively, so plan your view around the official complex. The man-made mahogany forest at Bilar on the way is free, and viewing it from the car is plenty. If you do get out, stop only where the driver finds a safe shoulder, keep it short, and hold your child's hand: buses and trucks pass fast on this two-lane road.
After the tour it is close to a two-hour drive from the Chocolate Hills to Panglao, so leave the viewpoint by 4 p.m. to reach the hotel before dinner. Set your drop-off as the Panglao hotel, not Tagbilaran port, when you book the car.
Day 4. A Panglao Morning, Then the Ferry Back
Alona Beach Panglao's main beach, free to enter, lined with restaurants and dive shops. A morning walk and swim fill the time on their own. Even the shallows hide sea urchins and coral fragments, so water shoes are the safe call for kids. Boat crews sell hopping and snorkeling trips right on the sand, but the Balicasag run takes a full half day, and the right call on this schedule is to save it for another trip.
Hinagdanan Cave A limestone cave with an underground lake: 75 pesos to enter, another 75 to swim (on-site rates). It is small enough that 30-40 minutes covers it, which is exactly what a pre-ferry morning has room for.
Bohol Bee Farm A clifftop farm restaurant known for honey-glazed chicken, edible-flower salad and honey ice cream. It sits about 20 minutes from Panglao lodgings, so lunch here before rolling to the port makes a natural line.
The return ferry baseline is the 3:20 p.m. sailing. Adding family margin to the 30-minute check-in cutoff means reaching Tagbilaran port by 2:30: leaving straight from Alona, depart around 1 p.m. (a 30-40 minute drive); with a Bee Farm lunch in the plan, start eating around 11:30 and leave the farm for the port before 1:30. Four backup sailings run behind it, from 4:20 to 6:30 p.m., but they are only a card you can play if boats are still running with seats left, and a coast-guard weather hold usually grounds the later boats together. So on an unsettled-weather day, move up to the 11:40 a.m. or 1 p.m. boat, and under a typhoon-grade forecast the safe call is returning to Cebu on the Day 3 evening instead (that swap means changing the car drop-off to the port and paying for an extra Mactan night). Back in Cebu, close with a lechon dinner. The Mactan room is still yours that night (it is the last of the four booked nights), so shower, repack, and heading out around 11 p.m. lines up with a dawn departure.
Running Without a Spare Day
This plan has no dedicated spare day; Day 2 and the Day 4 morning are the pressure valves. If rain is forecast for the Bohol day, keep the countryside course as planned rather than reshuffling: it is car-based and rain-tolerant, while swimming can pick its day on Mactan. Under a heavy-rain or flood warning, though, the Loboc cruise can be suspended, so on such a day drop the cruise and trim the loop to the sanctuary and the viewpoint. If typhoon-grade weather threatens ferry cancellations, do not force a day trip; drop Bohol. There are no Cebu-Bohol flights, so when the boats stop there is no detour.

Cebu is the Philippines' lechon (spit-roasted suckling pig) capital: crackling skin, moist meat, eaten without sauce in the Cebu style, ordered by the kilo or by the plate. Chains run multiple branches across Mactan and Cebu City, so most sit within a Grab ride of the resort belt. Besides the whole roast, lechon belly (a rolled pork-belly cut) is common, and restaurant platters often arrive as the belly roll you see in the photo. Booking the last dinner as lechon settles the pre-airport meal neatly. On Bohol, the Bee Farm's honey-glazed chicken and flower salad make an easy family lunch, and for dessert, mango and mango shakes are a safe order anywhere. Dried mango is cheaper at city malls than at the airport.

Rainfall around Cebu and Bohol is fairly even year-round, so even rainy-season days rarely rain out entirely, but ferries and hopping boats do get weather cancellations, which is why the dry season is the family default. The sea is calmest February-May, the best window for water time. Late December-January carries peak pricing and a rare but real typhoon record (December 2021), so watch forecasts. Publishing in the September-November shoulder means one thing: if you are planning a winter-break or Lunar New Year departure, it pays to start watching flight and resort prices now.
