Most people planning five days in Fukuoka do not get stuck for lack of things to see. They get stuck deciding what to do with the days that are left over once the city is done. Instead of listing sights, this guide settles the day allocation first, then splits the leftover two days four ways.
What does Fukuoka actually take days for
You really get four days. The first and last are eaten by flight times.
If you came to see places, a day and a half in the centre and half a day in Dazaifu covers it. Hakata Station and Tenjin are two subway stops apart, with Canal City, Kushida Shrine and Nakasu between them.
That leaves two days. This guide is about how to spend them.
Shopping and eating is a different answer. Tenjin Underground Mall, Daimyo, Canal City and LaLaport each take half a day. If that is you, skip to the city-only row below.

There is one number to take from this table. Yufuin is 4 hours 20 minutes round trip (2 h 10 m × 2). Put it in as a day trip and Yufuin is all you get that day. It is not Dazaifu, where you can bolt something onto the afternoon.
Where to book, and for how many nights
Most guides stop at "Hakata or Tenjin".

Between the two, take Hakata for two day trips: the bus terminal is attached to the station, removing the Tenjin-to-Hakata leg every morning. Take Tenjin if you are staying in the city.

Visit Japan Web only decides which queue you stand in. Still, the half hour you lose at immigration comes out of your first afternoon.
That figure adds the confirmed cash costs: a yatai dinner at 1,500~3,000 yen per person and the Dazaifu Liner return at 1,600 yen (800 yen × 2), plus day-trip snacks.
From the airport into the city
Flights from Korea land at the international terminal. The subway station is at the domestic terminal. That one fact is what throws off first-day plans.

Take "five minutes by subway" at face value and your arrival timing will be wrong. Budget 25 minutes.
⚠️ Check the subway fare before you go. The airport-to-Hakata leg sat in the 260 yen range for years, but a fare revision has been reported for October. If you travel after that, check the official site again (as of 2026-08).

On departure day, add the international shuttle transfer on top of the subway ride.
Day 1: Hakata and Tenjin
Canal City Hakata
A shopping complex with a fountain show in the canal between the buildings, and the first thing people name as a rainy-day fallback. Worth an hour before dinner.
Kushida Shrine
Home of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, with a float on permanent display so there is something to see year-round. Walking distance from Canal City.
Tenjin
Department stores and an underground mall. If Hakata is the station and movement, Tenjin is shopping and nights.
Day 2: Dazaifu in the morning, yatai at night
Dazaifu Tenmangu
A shrine to the deity of learning. The Dazaifu Liner Tabito runs from Hakata Bus Terminal in about 40 minutes for 800 yen cash, 780 yen with IC (as of 2026-08). A round trip is 1,600 yen cash (800 yen × 2).
Umegae mochi stalls line the approach and the Kyushu National Museum sits next door. Two hours for the shrine, half a day with the museum. Go in the morning so the afternoon stays in the city.
Fukuoka Tower or Ohori Park, not both
Do both and you are late for yatai. Split it on conditions.
- You can get there before sunset → Fukuoka Tower. Watching the light go from the observation deck is what this stop is for
- After sunset, or rain forecast → Ohori Park, an evening walk and the cafés around it
- With kids → skip both and take Momochi Beach
Nakasu yatai
Food stalls along the river. One dinner in Fukuoka belongs here.
Order a drink when you sit down, and with eight to ten seats, do not linger. Ask before photographing your neighbours. Between 6 and 7 is when seats are easiest.
Day 3: Yufuin
Yunotsubo street and Lake Kinrin
The base route is the shopping street from Yufuin Station to Lake Kinrin. Walking it both ways takes half a day.
The bus booking decides this day
You board at stand 34 on the third floor of Hakata Bus Terminal. About 2 hours 10 minutes, 3,250 yen one way (as of 2026-08).
A web advance discount brings it to 2,880 yen one way, so 5,760 yen return against 6,500 yen standard (3,250 yen × 2). It carries conditions on web booking, card payment and eligible departures.
⚠️ "Booking closes 10 minutes before departure" is a deadline, not advice on when to book. The Yufuin route sells out in peak season. Book from home once your dates are set. Holding a pass does not reserve you a seat, that is separate.
A day trip and an overnight are different trips
Yufuin has day-use bathing you can use without staying, so a day trip can include a soak. But after 4 hours 20 minutes of travel, you have comfortable time for the shopping street or the bath, not both.
A ryokan night usually includes dinner and breakfast, tying up that evening and the next morning. You trade an active day for the hot spring.
Day 4: Kitakyushu and Mojiko
Read this if you hold a pass
The Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura is JR West's Sanyo Shinkansen. The JR Kyushu Rail Pass does not cover it. You buy a separate ticket and limited express supplement.
The Limited Express Sonic runs the same stretch and is JR Kyushu, so your pass covers it at no extra charge, about 40~45 minutes. The SUNQ Pass is buses only.
This is where people walk through a Shinkansen gate on a pass and pay again.
Kokura first, Mojiko second
Kokura Castle and Tanga Market in the morning, then Mojiko. Tanga Market closes early, and Mojiko is worth more after dark.
Mojiko is a retro port district with preserved buildings and yaki curry as the local dish. Be at the harbour around sunset. Seen only in daylight it does not distinguish itself from any other small town.
Day 5: shopping and departure
Last shopping at the Hakata Station food hall or Tenjin. On a morning flight you are out before the arcades open, so buy the night before.

Do not combine two of these. You have two spare days. Put hot springs and small towns both in and travel eats one.
On a repeat visit, Ukiha and Itoshima replace Yufuin and Dazaifu. How those days are built changes completely with transit versus a rental car, so that is a separate article.
Passes, and when buying one loses you money

The SUNQ Pass costs less bought in advance from Korea than locally. The price is being revised, so no figure here. Check with an official seller before you fly.
⚠️ A pass does not reserve your seat. There are days you cannot board the Yufuin and Beppu routes without one.

Budget
The card is drawn from Tripop city data. Two day trips add transport on top: a Yufuin return at 5,760 yen with the web discount or 6,500 yen standard, and a Dazaifu return at 1,600 yen cash. The Yufuin overnight adds the ryokan.
When to go
Cherry blossom at Fukuoka Castle and Ohori Park, and autumn colour in late November, make the peak seasons. Hakata Gion Yamakasa runs in July.
If rain is forecast, move your day trips. Yufuin and Mojiko are mostly walking. Canal City, Tenjin Underground Mall, the Kyushu National Museum and LaLaport fill the day instead.
Fukuoka, don't miss these
Stand 34, third floor of Hakata Bus Terminal. Ten minutes before departure is the deadline, not the booking time. The web advance discount is 2,880 yen one way.
Hakata to Kokura is JR West's Sanyo Shinkansen. The Limited Express Sonic on the same stretch is covered.
Bring cash, and order a drink when you sit down.
Half a day including the round trip. Go early and the afternoon stays in the city.
The international and domestic terminals are apart. Build this into your first and last day.
In short
Five days in Fukuoka is a question of allocating days, not choosing sights. Four active days, minus a day and a half in the centre and half a day in Dazaifu, leaves two. Those two go to hot springs, small towns, the city, or somewhere that works with kids. Day trips run out and back, so consecutive nights in one hotel is right, and a Yufuin overnight buys the hot spring at the cost of an active day.
