Tsukiji Outer Market

Tokyo's largest food market, lined with more than 460 shops and stalls. The wholesale auction moved to Toyosu in 2018, but the outer market stayed put — so you can still eat just-made sushi, seafood skewers and tamagoyaki right on the street. It's a favorite starting point for a Tokyo food trip.

History

Tsukiji once held both a wholesale seafood market (the inner market) and the outer market that grew around it. In 2018 the wholesale auction function moved to Toyosu, but the outer market of retailers and restaurants remained, with more than 460 shops still trading. It is a dense lane of food stalls that formed around the wholesale operation over decades.

Getting there

A 1–3 minute walk from Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line or Tsukijishijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line. Most shops close on Sundays and Wednesdays, so check the day before you go.

Tips

  • ·5 am–2 pm; closed Sundays and Wednesdays
  • ·9–11 am is best — shops fully open and less crowded
  • ·Many stalls are cash only; bring ¥1,000 notes and coins
