The decision in a 4-day Shanghai trip is not which sights to pick. It is accepting that you get two full days, and Disneyland demands one of them whole. This guide fixes the day allocation first, then splits the route and the budget by whether Disney is in or out.
What Shanghai actually takes days for
You get two full days. The flight from Seoul is around two hours, but immigration and the airport transfer eat the first day down to an afternoon or an evening, and the last day is morning only.
Of those two days, the classic circuit, meaning the Bund, Nanjing Road, Yu Garden and a Lujiazui observation deck, takes a day and a half. Each area sits two or three metro stops from the next.
So the real question of a 4-day Shanghai trip is this. Where does the remaining day go? There are three candidates.
- A whole day at Disneyland
- Half a day in Zhujiajiao water town plus half a day in the French Concession
- A full day of Concession streets, cafes and food
This guide's base plan is the second. On a first visit, the water town plus the Concession shows you the widest span of what Shanghai is. If Disney is the point of the trip, follow its row in the variation table below.

Before you go: entry, connectivity, payment
China needs one more step of prep than most destinations. The four rows below are the whole list; clear them in order before departure.

Three of these deserve a longer note.
The arrival card is best filled before you board. Enter your passport details and hotel on the National Immigration Administration site and it issues a QR code; using it at immigration cuts out filling the form on the spot. Given how long the on-arrival queues get when several flights land together, the five-minute pre-fill earns its keep.
Alipay has a fee threshold. Foreign-card payments of 200 CNY or less carry no fee; above that, 3% applies to the whole amount. The confirmation screen shows the fee before you commit, so you can decide per payment, and big spends are better done on a physical card where terminals exist, hotels being the obvious case.
Do the card verification at home. On the ground, roaming SMS delivery and issuer approvals fail often enough to strand the registration. Test a small payment before you fly, and link the same card to WeChat Pay as a backup for the moments Alipay refuses.
You will barely touch cash, but 200~300 CNY per person covers the moments app payment fails. And carry your physical passport, not a photo. Real-name venues like Disneyland check the passport itself at the gate, and any hiccup with money or SIMs starts with showing it.
From the airport into the city
This section assumes Pudong Airport. If you land at Hongqiao, Terminal 2 connects directly to Metro Lines 2 and 10, Terminal 1 to Line 10 only, and there is nothing to decide.

First visit with a central hotel: take the Maglev. The train runs up to 300 km/h and drops you at Longyang Road in about 8 minutes; six or seven Line 2 stops later you are at East Nanjing Road and People's Square. With the same-day air ticket discount it is 40 CNY.
The Longyang Road transfer means leaving the Maglev building and entering the metro. Shanghai metro X-rays bags at every station entrance, so you queue once more here; with a suitcase, budget ten minutes for the change.
The last Maglev leaves Pudong Airport at 21:42 (as of 2026-08, operator's notice). Landing later than that, call a taxi or a Didi (China's ride-hailing app).
One trap to know. The Airport Link Line, opened in late 2024, has a stop named "Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone" that sounds like Disney's front door, but the actual gate is about 2.5 km away. Going to Disney from the city, take Metro Line 11 to Disney Resort station, which is at the entrance. More in the Disney section below.

Two things to read off this table. All four central areas are half-day units, so two days hold them all. And only Zhujiajiao and Disney are hour-plus rides, so those two can never share a day.
Where to stay
The default is three nights straight in the Nanjing Road~People's Square area. The airport Maglev transfer, Lujiazui and the river crossing all resolve onto Line 2, and the Bund and Nanjing Road are on foot. Moving hotels on a 4-day trip burns half a day on luggage, so this guide doesn't.

Your flight times set the first and last day
The base plan is built on conservative assumptions: afternoon arrival, morning departure.
Book better flights and the math changes. Morning departures from Seoul land before noon, and dropping bags at the hotel revives the whole first afternoon. A late-evening return keeps the last day alive until dinner. In that case pull Yu Garden forward into Day 1 and put a Concession walk into Day 4, and you have gained two half-day blocks.
Extend only after the tickets are booked, though. Morning flights cost more and sell out first, so budget bookings tend to land you right back on this base timetable.
Day 1, arrival: Nanjing Road and the Bund at night
With a morning flight you are checked in around 3~4 pm. The first day stays near the hotel: dinner and a night view, nothing farther.
Nanjing Road pedestrian street
A roughly 1.5 km car-free stretch running from People's Square to the Bund, lined with department stores, heritage shops and snack windows. Walk it to the end and you are standing at the Bund; no transit needed.
The Bund
Fifty-two stone buildings from the 19th-century concession era line the west bank of the Huangpu, and across the water stand the Oriental Pearl and the Shanghai Tower. This bank is a hundred years ago; that bank is now. The contrast is the whole city in one frame.
Come in the evening when the building lights are on; in summer they are fully lit around eight. Lights-out time varies by day of week, so aim for evening rather than late night.
Day 2: Yu Garden and Lujiazui
The classic circuit packed into one day: Yu Garden first, then across the river to Lujiazui in the afternoon.
Yu Garden
A classical southern garden built in the Ming dynasty. Entry is 40 CNY in April~June and September~November, 30 CNY in July~August and December~March (as of 2026-08), so summer and winter are cheaper while spring and autumn look better. Inside, the rockeries and corridors run like a maze and take an hour to ninety minutes.
Go early in the morning. Before the tour groups arrive, the corridors photograph with far fewer people in them.
The bazaar and lunch
The garden exits into a quarter of traditional-style shopping streets with no entry fee. Lunch here means Nanxiang Mantou Dian, the century-old xiaolongbao house. The sit-down queue and the takeaway window are separate lines, so if time is short, take the window.
Shanghai Tower observation deck
Cross the river on Line 2 in the afternoon. At Lujiazui station stands the Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building, with a lift to the 118th-floor deck. Adult entry 180 CNY (as of 2026-08).
Enter before sunset. Catch the daylight view, the sunset and the night view on one ticket; go up after dark and you get only the last.
The Lujiazui riverside
Down from the deck, walk the riverside promenade. On Day 1 you looked at this bank from the Bund; tonight you look back at the Bund's lights from here. Seeing one river from both banks closes out the city's night views.
Day 3: Zhujiajiao morning, French Concession afternoon
The fork day. The base plan pairs the water town with the Concession; the Disney swap is in the next section.
Zhujiajiao
A canal town at Shanghai's western edge. Metro Line 17 reaches Zhujiajiao station in about an hour and a half from the centre with the transfer, then it is a 15-minute walk from the station to the old town entrance; a local bus or the electric trishaws out front shorten that. Entering the town is free; only a few gardens inside charge.
Dozens of stone bridges cross canals dug in the Ming and Qing eras, with teahouses and noodle shops along the water. Go in the morning. Tour groups flood the narrow canal paths in the afternoon. Leave early, take an early lunch in the town, and be out by midday: that is the half-day shape.
Wukang Road and the French Concession
Back in town, ride the metro to the Concession quarter. From Wukang Road through Anfu Road, plane-tree streets run past 1920s~30s Western houses, cafes and small shops. The way to use this area is to walk it without a destination; the cafe density means a break appears wherever you need one.
Xintiandi
End the day in Xintiandi. It keeps the bones of shikumen alleys, Shanghai's traditional row-house style, with restaurants and bars built in, so dinner and a nightcap happen in one block. Its way with old buildings is the exact opposite of the morning's Zhujiajiao, which gives the day a different aftertaste at each end.
Day 4, departure: shopping and the airport
With an afternoon flight, the morning fits a last run at the West Nanjing Road malls or wherever is near the hotel. With a morning flight the shops are not open yet, so go straight to the airport without regrets.
Retrace whichever airport route you used on arrival; that is the error-free version. If it is the Maglev, the last train from Longyang Road is 21:40 (as of 2026-08), fine for evening flights; for early-morning departures it may not be running yet, so take a taxi. Work backwards from being at international departures two and a half hours early.

Two cautions.
Do not plan on buying at the gate. It is a real-name reservation system keyed to passport numbers, and peak dates sell out. The moment your visit date is fixed, buy, whether on the official app or a travel platform.
Do not get off the Airport Link Line at "International Tourism and Resorts Zone". The name sounds like the front gate but it is about 2.5 km short of it, with a bus ride left. From the city, Line 11 to Disney Resort station is the answer from the start.
In money terms a Disney day is 475~599 CNY of ticket plus park food and drink, which runs a notch above city prices: call it 650~850 CNY per person on top of the base budget. Within a 4-day trip you are trading one city day plus roughly that sum for the park.
Transit passes, and when one wins

The base plan rides the metro about ten times, which pays roughly 40 CNY ride by ride. The 45 CNY pass is about break-even on arithmetic; its real value is never queueing at a ticket machine. On days with the long hauls, Line 17 to Zhujiajiao or Line 11 to Disney, per-ride fares climb and the pass clearly wins. It starts on first tap and runs 72 hours, so starting it on the morning of Day 2 covers even the airport ride on Day 4. Note it excludes the Maglev and the suburban rail lines opened since 2024.

This is a city of mall and street-front restaurants rather than night-market stalls. Waitlists and ordering often run on QR codes, so a working Alipay makes the evenings go smoothly. Keep cash and a physical card as backup.
Budget
Shanghai has no city data in our database yet, so instead of the budget card, here are the researched figures. Per person on twin-share, converted at 216 KRW per CNY (2026-08). Flights are August round-trip fares from Seoul and hotels are central twin-share booking ranges, so both move with the season; if you fly from elsewhere, keep the ground rows and swap the flight line.

Transport stays at 30,000 KRW because the 72-hour pass is 45 CNY, about 10,000 KRW. Add Disney and another 130,000~170,000 KRW lands the standard build around one million KRW. Flights swing hardest by day of week, so if your dates are flexible, lock the fare first and fit the rest around it.
When to go
Spring (March~May) and autumn (September~November) fit a walking itinerary. Summer runs around 35°C with typhoon season on top, so an August trip should put midday indoors, the deck, museums, Disney's indoor rides, and push the walking to mornings and evenings.
The dates to avoid are clear: China's National Day week (around October 1) and the May Day holiday flood Shanghai with domestic crowds, and admissions, rail and hotel prices all go abnormal.

Fill it at s.nia.gov.cn and screenshot the QR code. You cannot do it mid-flight.
Issuer verification texts often fail to arrive in China. Finish a small test payment before departure.
Both flood with tour groups after noon. Splitting them across two mornings is the skeleton of this plan.
Daylight, sunset and night view on one entry. Go up after dark and you keep only one of the three.
Waitlists and ordering are often QR-based. A linked Alipay keeps dinner on schedule.

Four days in Shanghai is a problem of allocating two full days. The classic circuit ends in a day and a half; spend the remaining day on Zhujiajiao and the Concession and you get the city's breadth, spend it on Disney and you get a one-day theme park. Either way, filing the arrival card and linking Alipay before you fly is what protects your hours on the ground. Budget: around 510,000 KRW lean, 840,000 standard, one million with Disney.
