The Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha)

The former royal palace of Thailand, founded in 1782 by Rama I, and Bangkoks number-one sight. Within its walls stands Wat Phra Kaew, the royal chapel of the Emerald Buddha, so golden spires and intricate mosaics gather in one place. If its your first time in Bangkok, see this first.

History

Rama I built it in 1782 when he founded Bangkok as the new capital of the Chakri dynasty. For about 150 years (Rama I–V) it was the kings residence and the seat of royal government. Its Wat Phra Kaew enshrines the Emerald Buddha — thought to date to the 14th century and actually carved from jade — whose robes the king changes himself in a seasonal ceremony.

Getting there

About a 5-minute walk from the Tha Chang pier on the Chao Phraya River. Admission for foreigners is 500 baht, including Wat Phra Kaew and several museums. A dress code covering shoulders and knees is required, and it is generally open 08:30–15:30.
