Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
Just south of the Grand Palace, this is the oldest and largest temple in Bangkok. The 46m-long, 15m-high gilded Reclining Buddha filling its hall is overwhelming. As the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, you can also receive an authentic treatment at the massage school on the grounds.
History
Rama I extensively rebuilt an older 16th-century temple in the late 18th century. Under Rama III the colossal Reclining Buddha was created, and inscriptions on medicine, astronomy and literature were placed throughout — earning it the name "Thailands first public university." The soles of the Buddhas feet are inlaid with 108 auspicious symbols in mother-of-pearl.
