Pad Thai — Thipsamai
A long-standing institution founded in 1966 and known as a Bangkok pad thai legend. Its signature is prawn pad thai wrapped in a thin egg sheet, marked by smoky charcoal-wok flavor and house-pressed prawn oil. A Michelin Bib Gourmand pick, it draws long queues in the evening.
History
Pad thai is a stir-fried rice noodle dish that spread nationwide when the Thai government, in the 1930s–40s, promoted it to reduce rice consumption and establish a national dish. Thipsamai opened in 1966 on Maha Chai Road near the Grand Palace and, insisting on Chanthaburi rice noodles and charcoal cooking, became "the benchmark for Bangkok pad thai."
Getting there
The original on Maha Chai Road, not far from the Grand Palace and Khao San Road, is the famous one. The signature egg-wrapped prawn pad thai and the freshly pressed orange juice are favorites. Beyond the original, there are branches at IconSiam, Siam Paragon and more.
