Food & dining
Nasi goreng and mie goreng are the baseline, while babi guling, a whole roast pig, and bebek betutu, slow-cooked duck, are the Balinese plates. A meal at a warung runs a few dollars, while the brunch cafes of Seminyak and Canggu cost several times that, so prices split sharply by neighbourhood. Do not drink the tap water.
Getting around
From Ngurah Rai airport, Grab to Seminyak is about IDR 100,000-160,000 and to Ubud IDR 200,000-320,000. In rain or the 16:00-20:00 peak the Ubud run climbs to IDR 500,000-600,000. There is effectively no public transport on the island, so people move by Grab and Gojek or hire a car with a driver by the day. Scooter rental is common but needs an international permit and a helmet.

Do I need a visa for Bali, and what does it cost?
Most nationalities buy a visa on arrival. In 2026 it is IDR 500,000, about USD 35, for 30 days, extendable once by another 30 for a 60-day maximum. Applying online in advance as an e-VOA costs the same and grants the same rights, but it lets you use the automated gates, where the queue is shorter. Note that since June 2025 an extension requires visiting an immigration office in person for a photo and biometrics. Some nationalities are exempt, so check against your own passport.
Is the Bali tourist levy separate from the visa?
Yes, entirely separate. Every foreign visitor pays a Bali Tourist Levy of IDR 150,000, roughly USD 10, regardless of age. The fastest route is paying online at the official Love Bali site before you travel and keeping the QR code; counters at the airport also take it on arrival. Assuming it is bundled into the visa fee is a common mistake that ends in a queue you did not plan for.
Which arrival form do I fill in?
Since 1 September 2025 the electronic customs declaration and the health declaration have been merged into a single All Indonesia Arrival Card. If a guide tells you to file two separate forms, it predates the merge. Complete it online before arrival and keep the QR code to scan at the airport. You may bring in up to IDR 100 million in cash without declaring it; above that, customs declaration applies.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel?
Grab from Ngurah Rai runs about IDR 100,000-160,000 to Seminyak and IDR 200,000-320,000 to Ubud. In rain or between 16:00 and 20:00, the Ubud fare climbs to IDR 500,000-600,000. Grab and Gojek can only collect from designated airport pickup zones, so follow the signs; the airport taxi counter is fixed-price, which removes haggling but often costs more than the app. For a late-night landing or a long run like Ubud, arranging a hotel pickup is the calmer option.
When is the best time to visit Bali?
April to October, the dry season, is the best window — less rain, lower humidity, and workable for both beaches and temples. July and August are peak, so lodging jumps and Ubud and Uluwatu fill up. November to March is the wet season with frequent afternoon downpours, but they are squalls rather than all-day rain, so an itinerary weighted to mornings still works and lodging is clearly cheaper. Surfers should check season by break, since it differs coast to coast.
How much cash do I need in Bali? Are cards accepted?
Hotels, beach clubs and supermarkets take cards, but warungs, markets and temple entry are cash. Carry IDR 1,000,000-2,000,000 per person. Scams at street money changers are common enough to plan around: use a bank or a booth displaying Authorized Money Changer signage, and do not look away while your money is counted. Prefer ATMs attached to bank branches. Registering a card in the Grab app lets you ride without cash.
