Hokkaido's main city, three hours from Seoul. The streets run on a numbered grid, so an address tells you where a place is before you look it up. Mountains and hot springs are a few subway stops out of the centre, and Otaru and Noboribetsu are day trips.

Food & dining
Miso ramen and soup curry both started here, and the seafood bowls topped with sea urchin and salmon roe are sold from breakfast onward at Nijo and Jogai markets. Jingisukan, grilled lamb, is eaten with beer, and the Sapporo Beer Museum pours it fresh. Oysters, scallops and hairy crab are the winter catch.
Getting around
The JR Rapid Airport runs from New Chitose to Sapporo Station for JPY 1,150 in 33-37 minutes depending on the service. In the city three subway lines are enough; the base fare is JPY 210 and a subway-only day pass is JPY 830. On weekends and public holidays the Donichika ticket is JPY 520, which is much better value. An accommodation tax applies from 1 April 2026: prefecture and city combined, JPY 300 per person per night under a JPY 20,000 room, JPY 400 for JPY 20,000-50,000 and JPY 1,000 above that, usually paid at the front desk.
Highlights

The night view from the Mount Moiwa ropeway is the city's signature, with the Sapporo Beer Museum and Shiroi Koibito Park as indoor alternatives. Is there an accommodation tax in Sapporo, and how much?
Yes, from 1 April 2026, levied by the prefecture and the city together. Per person per night: JPY 300 total (JPY 100 prefecture + JPY 200 city) when the room is under JPY 20,000, JPY 400 between JPY 20,000 and 50,000, and JPY 1,000 at JPY 50,000 and above. The bracket is the room rate alone — meals and consumption tax are excluded. It applies to any stay from April 2026 regardless of when you booked, and is normally collected separately at check-in or check-out. School-trip participants are among the exemptions.
How do I get from New Chitose Airport into Sapporo?
The JR Rapid Airport is the fastest and simplest: JPY 1,150 to Sapporo Station, 33 minutes on the fastest service and about 37 on the standard one. Between 09:00 and 16:00 there are six an hour, so the timetable barely matters. The station is directly beneath the terminal, so you are not walking far with luggage. If you are staying in Susukino, it is two more subway stops from Sapporo Station.
What should I use to get around Sapporo? Is a day pass worth it?
Three subway lines cover nearly everything visitors want. The base fare is JPY 210 and a subway-only day pass costs JPY 830, so it pays off at four rides. On Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and over the new year, the Donichika ticket is JPY 520, which is clearly better — buy that one if your trip falls on a weekend. Nationwide IC cards such as Suica and Pasmo work here as they do elsewhere.
Do I have to register on Visit Japan Web?
No. In 2026 paper arrival and customs cards are still handed out on the plane and accepted at every airport, and you will not be refused entry for skipping it. Registering does save time — one QR code covers both immigration and customs, typically 20-30 minutes off your exit. The Joint Kiosk introduced in 2026, which handles both at a single machine, is installed at Narita Terminal 3, Haneda, Kansai and Fukuoka; New Chitose is not among them yet.
When is the best time to visit Sapporo?
The Snow Festival fills Odori Park with sculpture in early February, which is also the most crowded and most expensive week of the year. If you want snow without the crush, mid-January or late February is easier. June to August is cool and dry enough that people come up from the main island to escape the heat, and September-October brings the autumn colour. In winter the roads ice over, so plan around public transport rather than a rental car.
Can I do Otaru or Noboribetsu as a day trip?
Both. Otaru is 30-40 minutes by JR from Sapporo Station, so half a day covers the canal, the glass workshops and the music box hall. Noboribetsu Onsen takes about an hour and a half by bus or JR, and between the baths and Jigokudani it fills a day. Public transport reaches both, so neither needs a car even in winter.
