A volcanic island where the destination is the whole island. It is an hour from Gimpo on what is the busiest air route in the world. Hallasan sits in the middle and a road rings the coast, so wherever you stay, the far side is about ninety minutes away.

Food & dining
Grilled black pork and pork-broth noodles are the two most common plates; braised hairtail, sea urchin seaweed soup and abalone hot pot come from the sea side. The calendar shows in the food — bracken in spring, amberjack in winter. Dongmun Market doubles as a night market and gathers the evening eating, and the coast roads around Aewol and Seogwipo are lined with cafes facing the water.
Getting around
Trunk buses are a flat KRW 1,150 for adults regardless of distance; express buses are distance-based, capped at KRW 3,000 in cash. Airport limousine 600 runs towards Jungmun and Seogwipo for KRW 1,300-5,500 depending on how far you go. Buses alone will cost you most of a day in headways and transfers, though, which is why most visitors rent a car. From 16 September 2026 a discount cap applies to rental cars — no discount may exceed 60% of the registered daily rate — aimed at the swing that put a compact at KRW 20,000 off-season and KRW 200,000 in August.

Good to know before you go
Do I really need a rental car on Jeju?
You can manage without one, but the trip shrinks. Trunk buses are a flat KRW 1,150, and the express routes and the 600 limousine do pass the main sights, but once headways and transfer waits are added, two or three stops is a realistic day. With a car the same day holds five. If you would rather not drive, base yourself in Jeju City or downtown Seogwipo, mix taxis with buses, and plan around one side of the island rather than circling it.
Why do Jeju rental car prices swing so wildly?
The same compact really has gone for KRW 20,000-30,000 a day out of season and over KRW 200,000 in peak weeks, because companies registered a high rate and discounted heavily when demand was thin. From 16 September 2026 the province caps discounts at 60% of the registered daily rate. Peak pricing is expected to fall by 40-50% while off-season rates rise somewhat. Expect companies to keep adjusting their registered rates for a while after the cap starts, so compare several before booking.
Do I need a reservation to hike Hallasan?
For the Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa routes, you cannot start the climb without one. Booking opens at 09:00 on the first business day of the previous month — for a May hike, 1 April — and one person may book up to four people, once per week by hiking date. Once booked, an entry/exit QR code is sent to the registered phone number, and on the day you show that QR together with photo ID at the trail centre. Eorimok, Yeongsil, Donnaeko, Seokgulam and Eoseungsaeng need no reservation, so Yeongsil is the fallback if the booking window closes on you.
Is Manjanggul open again?
Yes. It was closed for nearly two and a half years for rockfall works and reopened on 30 May 2026. The open section runs about 1km from entrance 2 to the lava column, and adult admission is KRW 4,000. Ticketing is 09:00-17:00 with viewing until 18:00. A lot of pages online still say it is shut, so discount older write-ups. Inside it stays cool year round and the floor is wet, so bring a light layer and shoes that grip.
How do I get from the airport into town and to Seogwipo?
Limousine 600 runs through the Jungmun resort hotels and on to Seogwipo for KRW 1,300-5,500 by distance. For anywhere in Jeju City a trunk bus at KRW 1,150 is enough. Express buses are distance-based and cap at KRW 3,000 in cash. If you are renting a car, the pickup offices are off-airport and reached by company shuttle, so allow 30-40 minutes from landing to driving away.
When is the best time to visit Jeju?
April-June and September-October are the easiest. Late March to early April overlaps canola and cherry blossom, and June brings hydrangeas — those are the photogenic weeks. July and August are the swimming peak, which prices flights, cars and rooms up together. Winter brings amberjack season and snow on Hallasan, but the wind is strong enough that flight cancellations are common, so leave slack in the schedule.
