Okinawa Travel Guide (2026)
Japan, but not the mainland. Two and a half hours from Seoul, subtropical enough that winter holds around 15C. The Ryukyu kingdom and the American bases both left marks that show up in the food and the language, and because the island runs long north to south, what you want to see decides the whole itinerary.

Food & dining
Okinawa soba is wheat, not buckwheat, in a clear broth. Goya champuru, rafute braised pork belly and taco rice are common here and almost nowhere else, and awamori is a distinct spirit rather than a mainland shochu. Kokusai-dori and the Makishi public market cover most of it, and the market keeps the old arrangement where the second floor cooks what you bought downstairs.
Getting around
The Yui Rail monorail links Naha Airport to Shuri across 19 stations: JPY 290 to Kencho-mae in 13 minutes, JPY 320 to Makishi in 16, JPY 360 to Shuri in 27, with a one-day pass at JPY 800. The monorail only covers Naha, though. Churaumi Aquarium and the rest of the north are two hours away by road, which means a rental car, a highway bus or a tour coach. In the summer peak cars sell out early, so book one when you book the flight.
Highlights
Churaumi Aquarium (JPY 2,180) and the Kouri Bridge, Cape Manzamo, Kokusai-dori and the Makishi market in Naha, and Okinawa World in the south. Shurijo has been under reconstruction since the 2019 fire, and the main hall opens to the public on 23 November 2026. For the water, the Onna coast on the west side and Sesoko Beach in the north are the names that come up.

Good to know before you go
Can I visit Shurijo Castle right now?
The main hall burned down in 2019 and has been rebuilt since; it opens to the public on 23 November 2026, with the completion ceremony the day before. A revised admission fee and an advance reservation system start with the opening, so if your trip falls after that date, check the booking rules before you go. Until then the park grounds, the walls and a viewing route showing the reconstruction work are open, so the visit is not wasted.
Is there an accommodation tax in Okinawa?
Not during 2026. The prefecture's lodging tax is scheduled to begin on 1 February 2027. Because Hokkaido started charging one in April 2026, it is easy to assume Japan does this nationally, but accommodation taxes are introduced municipality by municipality. The start date is set, though, so check again for any trip from February 2027.
Do I need a rental car in Okinawa?
Not if you are staying in Naha. The Yui Rail runs from the airport to Shuri and a day pass is JPY 800, which covers Kokusai-dori and the castle comfortably. But Churaumi Aquarium is two hours north by road, and Manzamo and the Kouri Bridge are in the same direction, so anything north of Naha effectively requires a car. If you would rather not drive, tour coaches and highway buses leave from Naha, but they cut you down to one or two stops a day. Cars sell out early in the summer peak — reserve one when you book the flight.
What does Churaumi Aquarium cost, and can I buy ahead?
Adults JPY 2,180, high school students JPY 1,440, elementary and middle school JPY 710, and under-sixes free. Buying from a Japanese convenience store kiosk beforehand saves roughly JPY 200-400 and skips the ticket queue. Some periods also run a late-afternoon discount from around 16:00, worth checking if your day runs long. It is two hours each way from Naha, so four hours of driving — treat it as the anchor of a single northern day rather than an afternoon add-on.
Do I have to register on Visit Japan Web?
No. Paper arrival and customs cards are still handed out on the plane and accepted, and skipping the site will not stop you entering. Registering does let one QR code cover immigration and customs, which typically saves 20-30 minutes. The Joint Kiosk introduced in 2026 is only at Narita Terminal 3, Haneda, Kansai and Fukuoka; Naha is not on that list yet, so arriving here you are using the QR route rather than the single-machine one.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
If you intend to swim, the season runs April to October. July and August are hottest, busiest and most expensive, and a passing typhoon grounds flights and ferries together. March-April and October-November are the balance point: warm enough for the water without the peak. Winter holds around 15C, which is fine for walking and sightseeing but not for swimming — though January and February bring the earliest cherry blossom in Japan.
