Osaka Travel Guide (2026)

Kansai's commercial and culinary centre. The airport is barely half an hour out, and Kyoto, Nara and Kobe all sit within an hour by train, which makes Osaka the practical base for the region. Nights run late and prices sit below Tokyo.

Food & dining

The city that named itself kuidaore — eat until you go broke. Takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu are the headline acts, staged in Dotonbori and Shinsekai. Grilling seafood on the spot at Kuromon Market is the local move.

Getting around

Nankai's Rapi:t reaches Namba from Kansai Airport in as little as 34 minutes (¥1,450); the airport express on the same line takes about 50 minutes for ¥970. Namba to Umeda is eight minutes on the Midosuji line. In town the Osaka Metro does the work, and its Enjoy Eco Card day pass costs ¥820 on weekdays, ¥620 at weekends. You can also tap an overseas contactless card straight at the gate.

Highlights

The Glico sign in Dotonbori, Tsutenkaku in Shinsekai, Osaka Castle, the Kaiyukan aquarium and Universal Studios Japan. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each within an hour, so day trips extend the itinerary easily.

Good to know before you go

When is the best time to visit Osaka, and what should I avoid?

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, and October to November once the heat breaks, are the easiest months to walk the city. Early June to mid-July is the rainy season, and July and August bring highs around 35C with heavy humidity that makes a walking itinerary punishing. Golden Week in late April and Obon in mid-August fill hotels with domestic travellers. Osaka does not spike the way Kyoto does in autumn, so outside those windows it is the cheapest base in Kansai.

How do I get from Kansai Airport into Osaka?

The Nankai Rapi:t runs to Namba in as little as 34 minutes for ¥1,450 in a regular seat. The airport express on the same line takes about 50 minutes for ¥970, saving ¥480 — a fair trade unless you are carrying a lot of luggage. From Namba, Umeda is eight minutes on the Midosuji subway line. The JR Kansai Airport Line is the alternative if you are heading for Tennoji or Osaka Station, and there is a limousine bus worth checking for late arrivals.

Enjoy Eco Card or Osaka Amazing Pass — which should I buy?

For transport alone the Enjoy Eco Card is the cheapest option at ¥820 on weekdays, ¥620 at weekends and holidays, and ¥310 for children, covering every Osaka Metro line and the city buses, with only Yumeshima Station excluded. The Osaka Amazing Pass costs ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two, but bundles free entry to a long list of paid sights including Osaka Castle's main tower, the Kaiyukan and the Umeda Sky Building. Two or more paid attractions in a day and the Amazing Pass wins; one or none and the Enjoy Eco Card is better value.

eSIM or physical SIM for Osaka?

An eSIM set up before departure is the simplest option, running roughly USD 4-12 for a capped five-day plan and around USD 15-20 for unlimited in 2026. Coverage is solid across Namba, Umeda and Shinsaibashi, and holds up around Universal Studios and Osaka Castle. If your handset does not support eSIM, pick up a physical SIM before you fly.

Do I need a visa for Osaka, and what is the entry process?

Japan admits passport holders from Korea, the US, the UK, Australia and most of the EU visa-free for up to 90 days as tourists in 2026; confirm your own nationality before booking. Registering on Visit Japan Web beforehand reduces immigration and customs to a single QR code. It is optional, but Kansai Airport queues get long in peak season, so finish it at least six hours before boarding.

How much cash do I need in Osaka? Are cards accepted?

Osaka has moved to cashless faster than most of Japan. You can tap an overseas contactless card directly at Osaka Metro and New Tram gates, and since November 2025 that extends to city buses and the Imazato Liner, covering Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex and phone wallets. Older kushikatsu counters in Dotonbori and Shinsekai and the smaller stalls at Kuromon Market still take cash only, so carry around ¥10,000 per person. Note the lodging tax: since September 2025 stays under ¥5,000 per person per night are exempt, and above that the hotel adds ¥200 to ¥500.
