Vietnam's largest island, out in the Gulf of Thailand. Beaches, a national park and large resort developments all fit onto something about a third the size of Jeju. It is also the one place in Vietnam where the entry rules differ: fly in on an international flight and you get 30 days visa-free whatever your passport.

Food & dining
This is where nuoc mam comes from, so the fish sauce is different in every restaurant. Pepper farms are scattered across the island and pepper turns up in the seafood, and the standard evening is choosing seafood at the Duong Dong night market and having it grilled. Sea urchin and the herring salad goi ca truc are dishes you will rarely meet elsewhere.
Getting around
Phu Quoc International to Duong Dong town is 15-20 minutes by Grab, VND 100,000-150,000. Grab runs around VND 13,000 per km for a four-seater, so distance gives you a rough price. The island is long north to south, and getting between Sunset Town in the south and Grand World in the north takes close to an hour — decide where you are staying before you build the days. Vinpearl properties are linked by a free shuttle. The PAI pre-arrival declaration is mandatory at this airport too.

Good to know before you go
Is Phu Quoc really visa-free?
If you arrive on an international flight directly into Phu Quoc airport (PQC), you get 30 days visa-free regardless of nationality. It is the only place in Vietnam where the exemption carries no nationality restriction. Korean and Japanese passports already have 45 days nationwide and do not need it, but it matters if you are travelling with someone whose passport is not on that list. Note the condition is arriving directly: coming via Ho Chi Minh City on a domestic leg puts you under the normal rules. And if you do use the 45-day exemption, remember you must wait 30 days before entering visa-free again.
Do I need to file anything online before arriving?
Yes. The PAI pre-arrival declaration has been mandatory at Phu Quoc since 1 June 2026 — the second airport after Ho Chi Minh City on 15 April, followed by Hanoi, Da Nang and Cam Ranh, and since extended to the Dong Dang land crossing and a list of seaports. Everyone without a Vietnamese passport must file, and being visa-exempt does not excuse you. File at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn any time from three days before arrival up to arrival itself; you show the QR code it issues at immigration.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel?
Duong Dong town is 15-20 minutes by Grab at VND 100,000-150,000. Grab charges roughly VND 13,000 per km for a four-seater, so you can estimate other trips by distance. If you are staying south near Sunset Town it is further and dearer. Guests at Vinpearl properties can use the free shuttle that links them, which takes a real bite out of what you spend moving around the island.
Where on the island should I stay?
The island is long, and transfers eat time. Duong Dong has the night market, the restaurants and general convenience, which makes it the safe first choice. The Grand World and VinWonders area in the north is resort territory and suits families. Sunset Town and the cable car in the south are the pick if the evening light is what you came for. North to south is close to an hour each way, so decide what you actually want to do before booking a bed.
When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?
The dry season from November to March is the most reliable stretch, with calm water and long sun. Through the southwest monsoon in summer, squalls are frequent and the swell can cancel boat trips, though lodging drops noticeably. The start and end of the wet season move year to year, so check the forecast again close to departure.
How much cash do I need on the island?
Resorts and large venues take cards, but the night market, street stalls and small restaurants run on cash. VND 2,000,000-3,000,000 per person covers it. The dong has a lot of zeros and the notes are easy to confuse, so check what you are handed. Registering a card in the Grab app lets you ride without cash.
